Service Projects

TCMGA is dedicated to serving the community by educating the public on the design, development, and maintenance of a wide variety of gardens. We also provide valuable horticultural information to help our community grow and thrive. Below is a list of our current projects.

Student Gardens

Tarrant County Master Gardeners support youth education through vibrant outdoor learning spaces that include native plant gardens, vegetable beds, rainwater harvesting systems, and engaging features like fossil digs, butterfly gardens, sensory gardens, and wildlife-friendly ponds.

Students take an active role in planting, cultivating, and harvesting vegetables, many of which are shared with local food banks. These gardens serve as living classrooms, naturally integrating lessons in science, math, art, and language through hands-on activities.

After-school garden clubs, facilitated by Master Gardeners, guide students through lessons on soil health, composting, pollinators, and sustainable gardening practices—ranging from bug hunts to cooking with fresh produce and crafting bird feeders, often culminating in seasonal celebrations.

Master Gardeners collaborate year-round with teachers, parents, and volunteers to sustain these spaces, helping kids learn where their food comes from while nurturing a deeper appreciation for the environment and their role in it.

Junior Master Gardeners

As part of the garden-rich environments, some students participate in the Junior Master Gardener program—an international youth gardening initiative administered through the university Extension network. JMG equips youth with “hands-on” learning experiences to foster a love for gardening, environmental stewardship, leadership, and service.

The program offers tiered curricula—starting with elementary-level lessons like Learn, Grow, Eat & Go!, and progressing into middle school modules such as Operation Thistle and Operation Water—as well as formal recognition through stepwise certification and involvement in community service and leadership projects.
